This is the second workshop of a series of 3 workshops within the Baltic Nordic Residency Forum, where members of residency networks from three countries can connect online: SWAN - Swedish Artist Residency Network, LOORE - Estonian Creative Residencies Network, and FAIRE - Finnish Artist Residency Network.

This workshop about Emergency Residencies is designed for residency hosts who are interested in, or already engaged in, hosting dissident artists and artists at risk. The aim is to identify challenges, draw on our shared experiences, and develop practical strategies for support and advancement. By doing so, we hope to strengthen efforts both within national contexts and in cross-border collaborations.

As several international networks are evolving, a workshop where accumulated knowledge is preserved, shared, and built upon will promote collective and collaborative progress.

The workshop leaders are Theresa Lekberg and Power Ekroth. Theresa is an artist and residency host, and the initiator and project manager of SWANs Emergency Residencies working group.
Power Ekroth is a curator, and the coordinator of SWANs Emergency Residencies working group.

SWAN Emergency Residencies is a working group within SWAN that was initiated as a direct response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Over the past 2.5 years, SWAN ER have facilitated more than one hundred residencies for at-risk artists.

As we move forward, we are drawing from this experience to refine the practical aspects of supporting artists throughout the residency process— from initiation to completion.
We will also open the floor to discuss the distinct challenges of hosting artists from war-torn regions compared to dissident artists fleeing political repression.

About SWAN
From an organizational standpoint, SWAN has evolved from a network into an association. It consists of a diverse group of residency organizers, including independent actors, regions, municipalities, and institutions across various art fields. Together, these members collaborate on advocacy, share resources and knowledge, and maintain transparent communication under a unified framework.

We're looking forward to your registration!

ABOUT THE BALTIC-NORDIC RESIDENCY FORUM

Residency networks LOORE, FAIRE and SWAN  aim to build up a long-term network and involve other Baltic and Nordic residency networks in it.  LOORE includes 17 residency organizers across Estonia, FAIRE 70 residencies in Finland and SWAN encompasses over 130 network members and 70 residency members in Sweden.

The project aims to achieve a dual goal: to assist Estonian, Finnish, and Swedish networks of creative residencies in developing sustainable organizational work models, and to establish a collaboration platform for organizers of artist-in-residence programs in these countries, promoting the sharing of best practices, facilitating exchanges, and stimulating collaborations within the Nordic-Baltic region.

The network was initiated by LOORE in the fall of 2023, and developed in dialogue with representatives of the FAIRE and SWAN networks.
Baltic-Nordic Residency Forum has received a grant from Short-term network funding from the Nordic Culture Point to establish a project.
